Rajamahendravaram, Andhra Pradesh, Akhanda Godavari Project– June 2025:
In a major step towards enhancing tourism, culture, and environmental beauty in Andhra Pradesh, the foundation stone for the Akhanda Godavari Project was laid with grandeur and enthusiasm. The ambitious initiative, estimated to cost Rs. 94.44 crore, aims to revitalize the iconic Godavari Riverfront and its adjoining heritage sites in Rajamahendravaram, promising a new era of development and prosperity for the region.
The ceremonial stone-laying took place at the scenic Pushkar Ghat, with several key dignitaries in attendance. Union Jal Shakti Minister Gajendrasingh Shekhawat, Andhra Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister Pawan Kalyan, and State Tourism and Culture Minister Durgesh collectively inaugurated the project, drawing widespread attention from the local community and media alike.

A Vision to Reimagine the Godavari Riverfront
The Akhanda Godavari Project is not just another infrastructure plan—it is a cultural renaissance aimed at preserving the spiritual, natural, and historical significance of Rajamahendravaram. The city, which has long stood as a cultural beacon in Andhra Pradesh, is now poised to become a nationally recognized tourism and heritage hub.
Under this project, several landmark areas are set to receive a modern facelift. These include:
- Havelock Bridge – a colonial-era engineering marvel that will be transformed into a cultural heritage walkway.
- Pushkar Ghat – one of the most sacred and picturesque ghats on the Godavari River, which will be enhanced with beautification and improved amenities.
- Kadiyam Nursery – known for its botanical diversity, will be integrated into the eco-tourism circuit.
- Kota Satthemma Temple – a revered local shrine that draws thousands of devotees annually.
- Boating facilities along the riverbanks, tent city accommodations, and a daily ritual of Nithya Aarti to draw spiritual and wellness tourism.
With a deadline of two years, officials have assured that the project will be completed by mid-2027, just in time to leverage seasonal tourism and cultural festivals in the region.

Leaders Emphasize Cultural and Economic Benefits
Speaking at the event, Union Minister Gajendrasingh Shekhawat lauded the government’s commitment to the revival of riverside ecosystems and cultural heritage, noting that projects like these are essential for promoting sustainable development.
“The Godavari River is more than a water body—it is a living legacy. Through this initiative, we’re not just revamping the infrastructure, we are celebrating the spiritual heartbeat of this region,” he said.
Deputy CM Pawan Kalyan, in his heartfelt address, emphasized the project’s potential to create employment, uplift local businesses, and attract national and international tourists.
“This is a dream come true for Rajamahendravaram. The Akhanda Godavari Project will blend tradition with modernity. It will benefit artisans, small businesses, boat operators, temple priests, and every citizen in this region,” he said.
Meanwhile, Tourism Minister Durgesh stated that this initiative is just the beginning of a broader transformation strategy for Andhra Pradesh. He shared plans for further connecting the Akhanda Godavari Project with spiritual circuits, adventure tourism, and eco-based attractions across the state.
Tourism, Employment, and Infrastructure to Get a Boost
Once completed, the Akhanda Godavari Project is expected to bring in lakhs of tourists annually, significantly boosting the regional economy. The integrated development model includes modern amenities like:
- Riverbank promenades and gardens
- LED lighting and decorative infrastructure
- Floating jetties for safe boating experiences
- Eco-friendly tent accommodations for tourists
- Daily Nithya Aarti performances, modeled after Ganga Aarti in Varanasi
In addition to drawing spiritual and cultural tourism, this initiative will create hundreds of direct and indirect jobs—ranging from construction and logistics during the development phase to hospitality, retail, and tour operations after launch.
Furthermore, with the inclusion of Kadiyam Nursery, horticulture and floral tourism are expected to get a unique identity, attracting nature lovers and botanical researchers from across India.
Environmentally Sustainable and Culturally Rooted
What sets this project apart is its sustainability-centric approach. Officials have confirmed that the new infrastructure will incorporate green building principles, solar-powered lighting, and waste management systems to ensure minimal ecological disruption to the Godavari River ecosystem.
The Havelock Bridge, a heritage structure, will not be demolished but carefully restored. Plans are in place to convert it into a walking trail and viewing deck for cultural exhibitions and Godavari sunsets.
Moreover, the tent city will cater to eco-tourists and pilgrims alike, offering a blend of traditional hospitality with modern comfort—all while maintaining environmental integrity.
The Way Forward
The launch of the Akhanda Godavari Project marks a watershed moment for Andhra Pradesh, especially for Rajamahendravaram, which has long awaited such holistic riverfront development. With proper execution, transparent governance, and community participation, the project is poised to set a benchmark in culturally rooted urban renewal.
