As a mark of respect, the Mumbai players also wore black armbands, acknowledging the invaluable impact he had on Mumbai cricket. Milind Rege, an off-spinning all-rounder, played 52 first-class matches for Mumbai in the 1970s. He picked up 126 wickets at an average of 29.23, including three five-wicket hauls, and scored 1,532 runs at an average of 23.56. Though his numbers may not have been extraordinary, his presence on the field and in the Mumbai cricketing community was immense.
Rege also had the honor of captaining the Mumbai team in a few matches. He was known for his sharp cricketing brain and leadership skills, which earned him immense respect from his teammates and the cricketing fraternity. The Man Behind the Success of Mumbai Cricket
After retiring from professional cricket, Milind Rege continued his association with Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) for more than two decades. He served in multiple capacities, including as a selector, administrator, and mentor. In 1988, Rege was one of the selectors who played a crucial role in the inclusion of a young Sachin Tendulkar in Mumbai’s Ranji Trophy squad. This decision changed the course of Indian cricket forever, proving Rege’s keen eye for talent.
His tenure as Mumbai’s selector began in the 1980s, and in 2011, he was appointed as the chairman of selectors. Although he resigned in 2012, he remained an active member of the selection committee and was reinstated as chairman in 2015. He was the secretary of the Tata Sports Club for over two decades, president of the Association of Cricket Umpires of Mumbai, and a member secretary of the Cricket Improvement Committee. Additionally, he served as the West Zone representative of the Media Committee for the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). His extensive contributions to cricket administration solidified his reputation as a guiding force in Indian cricket.
Tributes Pour in for Milind Rege
Former Indian cricketer Sandeep Patil expressed his deep sorrow over Rege’s passing. Patil, who shared a strong bond with Rege, described him as his pillar of support. “At my book release, he said, ‘See you in Kolkata.’ I was waiting for him to visit me. He played a very important role in my life, both on and off the field. He and his wife, Raj, stood by me in my toughest times. Mumbai has lost one of its biggest supporters. His contribution in helping and building the careers of young talents will remain unmatched,” Patil said.
Rege remained loyal to Dadar Union, Cricket Club of India (CCI), and Mumbai Cricket Association throughout his life. Even in his later years, he continued to be actively involved in Mumbai cricket as a long-serving selector and administrator.
